Marion County South Carolina
Marion District, South Carolina, in 1843, is
situated in the east part of the state, and contains 1,200 square miles. The surface is
level, and much of it marshy. It is drained by Great and Little Pedee Rivers and their
branch's. Capital [County Seat], Marion Court House. There were in 1840, neat cattle 21,909, sheep 8,352,
swine 39,837; wheat 4,033 bushels produced, rye 1,353, Indian corn 377,041, oats 16,416,
potatoes 61,530, rice 67,945 pounds, tobacco 1,852, cotton 603,496; 12 stores, capital of
$48,450; 3 distilleries, 6 flouring mills, 21 grist mills, 20 saw mills. Capital in
manufactures $53,960. 2 academies, 11 schools with 233 scholars. Population:
whites 593, slaves 5,251, free colored 88; total, 13,932.
